“Songs of Romance"
Robert Schumann’s Kerner Lieder Op. 35
Plus selections of English Songs by Gerald Finzi and Ivor Gurney
Schumann wrote the “Kerner” Lieder in 1840 at a time in his life when writing songs were, for him, the highest form of expression. They are similar to Schubert’s Winterreise as the "composer gazes upon the busy world” (Graham Johnson).
Cornelius and Adam will also perform a selection of beautiful English songs, and they very much look forward to returning to Highgate Sessions.
Award-winning German Baritone Cornelius Lewenberg started his singing at the Staatstheater Stuttgart. During his study at Karlsruhe conservatory he worked with Prof. Röhlig, Prof. Shirai and Prof. Höll. Other mentors have included KS. Prof. Julia Varady, Brigitte Fassbaender and Prof. Eiche. Lewenberg has appeared at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, the Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Stadttheater Pforzheim, and the Staatstheater Schwerin.
Lewenberg was an award-winner of the Badischer Kulturfonds e.V., the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg. In 2019, he won at the Opernakademie Bad Orb and appeared as Il Conte in Mozarts "Le nozze di Figaro“. Apart from his demanding schedule as an Oratorio soloist, Lewenberg is a regular Lieder recitalist, having given concerts throughout Germany, Austria and England.
His recent opera roles include Papageno in "Die Zauberflöte“ by Mozart at the Opernspiele Munot, Mendel in "Anatevka" at the Komische Opera Berlin and Kilian in "Der Freischütz“ at the Schlossfestpiele Zwingenberg.
